Technical Information
The Kingframe Steel Frame System is engineered from pre-hot dipped galvanised steel, offering robust structural performance, durability, and compliance with UK standards. The system includes a range of cold rolled components, designed for ease of installation, handling, and environmental responsibility.
Basic Components
‘C’ section Stud and ‘U’ section Track components are formed from pre-hot dipped galvanised steel to BS EN 10346: 2015, Grade S390 + zinc coating Z275 g/m². Guaranteed minimum yield strength = 390N/mm². Ancillary components including Angles, Cleats, Brackets and ‘Z’ Bars are formed from pre-hot dipped galvanised steel to BS EN 10346: 2015, Grade S275 + zinc coating Z275 g/m². Guaranteed minimum yield strength = 275N/mm².
Erection of Components
All systems are constructed on-site and must be installed to the relevant standards and industry guidelines. Liability for the quality and accuracy of the installation rests with the installation contractor and not Kingspan Steel Building Solutions.
It is recommended that a purpose made cutting station is used that will protect against noise, projectiles and sparks and shall be located in a designated area as agreed with the Principal Contractor.
Care must be taken when site cutting components square where they are to be used in right angled connections and all cut edges should be protected.
Fixing of components shall be with self-tapping screws or otherwise by design. Screw type and size shall be as typical details or to a project specific design.
All screw fixings must be installed perpendicular to the surface wherever possible. All bolt fixings are to be Grade 8.8. No holes are to be cut or formed in Kingframe SFS without prior reference to Kingspan Steel Building Solutions.
Service slots can be provided in studs when requested and if deemed acceptable by our technical department. Track members shall be securely anchored to the supporting structure as shown on the drawings. Complete, uniform and level bearing support shall be provided to upper and lower tracks. Abutting lengths of track shall be securely anchored to a common structural element and spliced, all as determined by structural calculations. It is important to differentiate between base track and head track sections; these can be identified with a 55mm flange for the base section and 67mm flange for the head section which is designed to facilitate deflection at the head. Studs shall be plumbed, aligned, and securely attached/located within the upper and lower tracks.
Framing of wall openings shall include headers, lintels and supporting studs as shown on the drawings.
It is the responsibility of the installation contractor to provide temporary bracing and ensure continuous structural stability as specified by appropriate Temporary Works until completion of the Kingframe SFS installation.
External Walls
Insulation should be provided over the external face of the stud walling that is sufficiently robust to remain in place during and post construction and should have adequate thermal resistance to prevent cold bridging and interstitial condensation.
Where compound jamb studs are required, consideration should be given to insulating with suitable insulation as specified by the Principal Contractor.
All insulation should be fixed in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions. Consideration should be given to joints in insulation boards and the repair of damage to prevent ingress e.g. taping of joints or provision of a breather membrane. Internal linings should be fixed in accordance with the chosen board manufacturer’s instructions and selected to achieve all necessary requirements including fire, thermal, and acoustic performance as specified by the Architect.
Where masonry cladding forms the external envelope, it should be tied back to our studs using stainless steel wall ties and continuous channels fixed with standoff screws. Additional studs are to be fitted at all jambs to provide support for wall ties.
Typical Composition
Steel panels are assembled from cold rolled steel sections manufactured from hot dip, zinc-coated / iron zinc coated slit steel coil to BS EN 10143:2006. The profiles are rolled in accordance with the specification for cold rolled steel profiles to BS EN 10162:2003. Cold rolled profiles are manufactured as suitable for use in the specification of galvanised steel stud and track walls and linings using screw fixed gypsum walling board to BS 7364:1'0 or other boards depending on the application. Boards, Fastenings and Fittings may be of various proprietary materials each of which will have its own safety information sheet supplied by the respective product manufacturer.
Handling of Product
Steel sections are either handled individually or banded into bundles for ease of transportation depending on size, shape, and weight. Steel sections are loaded onto transport to facilitate safe transport and offloading of product when presented to site. Consideration shall be given to site logistics and the desired method of unloading such as mechanical crane or telehandler.
Care must be taken to avoid distortion or damage to the sections during handling as this could affect the structural integrity of the product. It is important that sufficient space is available for moving sections from the unloading point to any intermediate storage area and/or the final assembly location.
Individual banded packs of stud and track shall be lifted by either telehandler, hoist, crane, or other suitable mechanical lifting aid.
Appropriate lifting accessories such as web slings along with a suitable tag line shall be utilised to secure and steady the load.
Site specific methodology for transportation of loads within the site shall be detailed within the installation method statement and lift plan where necessary.
