What is BIM?
BIM (or Building Information Modelling) is the process of utilising data to build more comprehensive plans and models in construction. 3-dimensional (3D) modelling is just one aspect of BIM, as these data-rich plans hold information on a product/project’s capabilities, certifications, behaviours, costs, and much more.
By integrating every detail known about an element into its BIM file, those on the product roadmap have access to information about specification, installation, handover and lifecycle – all just mouse clicks away. Through the power of BIM models, we can then utilise platforms such as Trimble Connect to visualise data-rich models in the virtual plane.
What were previously 2-dimensional drawings have now evolved into the 3rd, 4th, even as far as the 9th dimension. Although this sounds a little extreme, factors such as height, width and depth are standard in most construction plans, stretching to the commonly accepted 4th dimension of time.
However, when incorporating BIM’s ability to combine data, we can interpret information surrounding cost (5D), facilities management (6D), sustainability (7D), health and safety (8D) and circularity (9D). Dimensions after 5 aren’t commonly accepted amongst all in the construction space, so it’s important to gain clarification from who you’re collaborating with, but nonetheless it’s a demonstration of the complexity and versatility of a BIM model – far more than a simple 3D render.
