Puhinui Station
KingZip: the only product capable of achieving the complex compound curve so design was not compromised

Puhinui Station, located in Papatoetoe, is Auckland’s new bus and train transport hub, providing passengers with congestion-free connections to the airport and the rest of the city.
Designed by Jasmax, the roof form was a product of practical requirements and key design aspirations. Maximising the amount of natural daylight entering the station without the use of skylights, providing passive ventilation to the concourse and keeping out wind-driven rain.
Also, the design visually links the platform to the concourse through a curved flowing form. The angle in which the roof curves down to the platform gives the roof a graceful, draped effect, and provides maintenance access to the roof. The roof and wing walls both act to envelop the station, providing protection and a distinct identity.
The challenge of the design’s specific geometries was met with KingZip’s individually pre-curved aluminium top sheets with an aluminium liner deck, Tecsound acoustic membrane with steel top hats and halter clips.
Installers Project Unite won Commercial Roof of the Year Award for the Puhinui Station project at the 2021 RANZ Conference. As one judge commented: "It was the complexity, the innovative use of metal, visual appeal and awareness of the workmanship and knowledge required to complete this sort of work that caught the judges' attention."
