Abraham Moss Library and Leisure Centre

In Crumpsall, construction has been completed on the Abraham Moss Library and Leisure Centre. The centre boasts a sports hall, two squash courts, a gym, a dance studio, and a library, situated on the ground floor. The multi-million investment from Manchester City Council is part of their long-term strategy to transform and modernise their leisure estate, providing a sustainable future as part of the city’s goal to become net-zero by 2038. Having both a library and a leisure centre in one location provides an enriching environment for the local community.

The previous Abraham Moss Leisure Centre and Library, built in 1973, was demolished in 2021 to make way for this advanced complex. The new, ultra-modern centre now offers a place for both fitness and knowledge to the people of Manchester.

Abraham Moss marks the fourth centre developed in accordance with the strategic plans of the City Council. The library on the ground floor, serves as a hub for cultural and creative endeavours and houses an extensive collection of books for all age groups. With the implementation of a state-of-the-art self-issue and return system, the library operates seven days a week, ensuring accessibility even in the absence of staff.

The centre is set to play a significant role in providing for local communities in Crumpsall, with a social value promise to offer 276 apprentice weeks, 19 education activities, 17 work experience placements, 13 employability activities and 49% of funds to be spent with Greater Manchester suppliers.

For the project, both Kingspan QuadCore AWP Wall Panels and Kingspan QuadCore Evolution Axis Wall Panels were selected for their energy efficiency and aesthetic appeal. As Manchester City Council works towards being net-zero by 2038, opting for QuadCore panels helped to reduce the overall carbon impact of this build. The QuadCore insulation used in both the Architectural Wall Panels and Evolution Axis Wall Panels has a Thermal Conductivity of 0.018W/m.K and, depending on the thickness chosen, can achieve a u-value of up to 0.12W/mK, calculated according to Building Regulations Part L2 in England and Wales, and relative standards across the UK. This helps to achieve significant operational energy savings before the addition of optimized building services, renewable technologies and ‘clean’ grid supply.

The Architectural Wall Panels were also chosen for the project for their aesthetic appeal, contributing to the new building’s sleek and modern façade that echoes the building’s promise to be an updated, state-of-the-art community hub for its locals. The Architectural Wall Panel range has secret-fix components that deliver a clean, smooth and unprofiled finish. Finished in stylish black and gold, the panels contribute to the use of colour as a messaging tool, representing a new phase of luxury and wealth for the area.
